What Is A Minimizer Ring?
The MiniMIZER Ring is a specialised medical device used in bariatric surgeries, such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. It works by restricting the passage of food through the stomach, helping patients feel full for longer periods and aiding in more consistent weight loss. The ring is designed for adjustability and safety, allowing surgeons to customise its fit for each patient, and its visibility on X-rays ensures proper placement and follow-up care.
Why Choose a Minimizer Ring?
Surgeons prefer the MiniMIZER Ring for its proven effectiveness in addressing common post-surgery challenges, such as weight regain and dumping syndrome. Its ease of placement and adjustable sizing make it a versatile solution in both gastric bypass and sleeve procedures.
Additionally, Bariatric Solutions provides expert support during initial procedures, having developed the MiniMIZER in collaboration with experienced surgeons. Clinical studies and randomised controlled trials have demonstrated its success, leading to better patient outcomes and a lower risk of complications.
TOTAL COST $2500.00 INCL. GST
Mechanism of Action
The ring makes food go through the gastric pouch more slowly which gives heightened restriction and feeling of fullness.
4 CLOSING POSITIONS
The ring has 4 closing positions (see fig. 1) enabling the surgeon to close the ring at 6,5 – 7,0 – 7,5 – 8,0cm. It also allows for going back from small to larger sizes with a special manoeuvre.
Results
RING ON A GASTRIC BYPASS:
- Studies comparing a Gastric Bypass with a ring vs no ring have shown increased % of excess weight loss (%EWL) of 77% vs 65% in Bypass patients without a ring – an increase of 12% of excess weight lost at 5 years post-op
- 50% of patients with a ring had no weight regain at 5 years post-op vs 27% without a ring
RING ON A SLEEVE:
- Percentage of excess weight lost (%EWL) at 5 years post-op: 73% with a ring vs 62% without a ring
- Less weight regain at 5 years post op
TOTAL COST $2500.00 INCL. GST
What are the Downsides?
- Increased food intolerance with a ring – regurgitation of food more than once a week in 20% of patients
- Ring related complications include erosion (2.3%), slippage (1.5%)
- Ring removal rate for all reasons: 4-5%
